Student Accommodation in London

For the first time students of the London University, finding a reasonably priced accommodation in the city can be quite a daunting task. Though there is a plethora of choice available in London, from the rooms in the University Halls to sharing a house or flat, private halls of residence, or staying with host families, one would still need to plan much in advance, depending on your budget and requirements.

Halls of residence are not for everybody but most students prefer them in their first year. They provide a supportive environment that helps you to make new friends and get used to London living. To be eligible for the London University’s accommodations, one has to be a registered, full time graduate with one of the colleges or institutes. There are 8 Halls of Residence available for the students with various needs. The rates in each Hall vary with the facilities, and the type of rooms on offer.

There are many options available for room types in these Halls of residence. From single rooms to twin sharing, double rooms, single suits and double suits, there are enough options for the students. While the Canterbury Hall, Commonwealth Hall, Connaught Hall, Hughes Parry Hall and Nutford House offer single and shared catered rooms from £17 - £30 per night, the College hall is slightly more expensive with its ensuite rooms. All these have a launderette and an activity hall with small tea kitchens, and breakfast and evening meals.

The Lillian Pension hall offers catered rooms and flats but one has to pay for the meals separately. The prices here vary from £12 - £34 /night, depending on whether you get single/double ensuite rooms or opt for double bedrooms with attached bathroom and kitchen facilities. The International hall is the only one that allows children of the students to stay with them. Rates vary from £19 - £54 /night for single rooms to double studios and single/double room flats. There is a full fledged restaurant and a café bar on the site with squash courts and other facilities.

All the Halls of residence collectively are able to house only 30% of the students studying in the London University. A good 40% have to depend on the private sector, while the rest stay at home. For the students who prefer to stay on their own, they can enlist with the University of London Housing Corp to help ease their accommodation woes.

London also offers private Halls of residence like Unite, Cass and Claredale and Jarvis UPP. Cass offers centrally heated single rooms with shared bathroom facilities. The kitchen area has the basic cooking range but one has to get one’s own pans, crockery and cutlery. Claredale is slightly different; it has 68 flats with 265 single rooms. The rooms are centrally heated, fully furnished and have shared kitchens and wash areas. The weekly rents vary from £ 93 - £107 depending on the room size.

International students can also apply to the LCOS for the voluntary charitable hostels or stay with host families. Another option is the home share, where one can stay with an elderly person and share the home facilities. The charges are around £ 68 – £ 70 per month. For people who like the elite living, the studios apartments come with the works, a 24/7 concierge service, internet facility, flat screen TVs, telephony and airport pickups. The rentals are steep, they can be anywhere between £147 - £190 per week, but are convenient for students who can afford it and like their privacy.
