Student Accommodation in Glasgow
Any existing student or accommodation service will tell you that when coming to University it is best to live in halls during your first year. This gives you time to adjust to being at University life, which can be a culture shock, before renting private accommodation in your second, third or fourth years where there are the added stresses of utility bills and dealing directly with a personal landlord.
The University of Glasgow offers a wide range of both catered and self catered accommodation, all within walking, driving or a bus journey’s distance from the University Campus. Cairncross house, the Queen Margaret flats, the student apartments and Winton Drive residences are all self-catered with communal facilities such as car parking, secured bike storage, laundrettes and gyms. Marano Street student Village is the largest area of self catered accommodation, housing around 1170 students and is a twenty minute walk from the main campus. Wolfson Hall is the University of Glasgow’s fully catered accommodation, 3 miles from the University campus.
There are University specific bus services going to and from Wolfson Hall, with students offered breakfast and an evening meal during Monday to Friday, and brunch and dinner on the weekends. In total the University ‘halls’ are home to around 3400 students with varying physical abilities, courses and personal interests. They say your first year of University is one of the most memorable of your life and at Glasgow’s student accommodation you can share this with thousands of others.
Outside of University accommodation there is also the opportunity to rent from a private landlord or letting agency. Many of these cater specifically to students, understanding the needs and desires of this age group. The University of Glasgow website, along with the accommodation services office on campus keeps a record of the best landlords, agencies and residences for students regarding their individual needs along with guides and recommendations of what to look out. What is important to remember with privately rented student accommodation is that utility bills, council tax and safety checks are not always included within a tenancy and they need to be asked for.
As with most Universities, the University of Glasgow follows an admissions policy which gives priority to students who are in their first year of study, are embarking of a full-time course and who live too far away from the University to commute and look for privately rented accommodation in the area. A high priority is also given to those who apply for student accommodation before August 22nd the year prior to the start date of their course and this can be done either by applying online via the website or by downloading and printing off an application form to send to the University.
Student accommodation at the University of Glasgow is situated right in the heart of all the excitement, as well as being within walking distance from the study facilities and overlooked by stunning architecture. Wherever you decide to stay, the University accommodation services are right beside you to guide you through application right up to when you move out.
