Aberdeen is a lively, vibrant city in Scotland - a city of the young and for the young. Studying in the University of Aberdeen can be pretty exciting, however, finding a place to live can be a nightmarish experience for any student, unless guided properly. To ensure that the students don’t have a hard time finding a suitable accommodation, the Aberdeen University has a Student Accommodation Office that assists undergraduates in finding somewhere to stay.

The Aberdeen University offers a First Year accommodation guarantee to its single, new students, but unfortunately due to the growing demand, isn’t able to offer housing to the second and third year students anymore. There are many Halls of residence that are managed by the University. They are Hillhead, Elphinstone Road and Crombie Johnston. All the three Halls require a contract of 38 weeks.

Hillhead is a huge complex housing about 2012 students every year. It is situated in close proximity to the main University campus and there are regular buses that connect it to the campus and the city centre. Hillhead offers both catered and self catered single rooms and flats with shared facilities. The rentals vary from £288-£464/month. Facilities include 24 hours porter, parking, sports areas, bars, TV lounges, laundrettes and computer rooms.

The Crombie Johnston has similar facilities but has more variety of rooms. Students can choose between en-suite rooms, or the ones with hand basin, and shared facilities. The charges vary from £118- £137/week and one can have a vacation retainer for £50.

Elphinstone Road is suited for more mature students and is organised into flats with single study bedrooms. The room rates start from £72/week. Both of these are located just a stone’s throwaway from the main campus and the library.

For students who don’t want to live in the University Halls, there is a plethora of choice available in the private housing. Aberdeen Youth hostel located on Queen’s road is great for a short stay. There are dorm beds and private rooms with price range from £13-£14/ bed. The maximum stay limit here is 21 days. Aberdeen Summer Village is another hostel located on the Linksfield road and offers flats with 6 rooms each at £16/day.

There are many Private Halls located quite close to the Aberdeen and Robert Gordon Universities. Spring Garden, Hunter Court, King Street Exchange, Copper Court, the Old Fire Station and Mealmarket Exchange can all be found in the vicinity of the Aberdeen College, University of Aberdeen and the Robert Gordon University. All of them offer an assortment of room types; en-suite, non en-suite rooms, studios and a choice of apartments, from 5 bedroom flats to studio flats. Facilities include car and bike parking, laundry rooms, and well equipped kitchens. All of them are available for minimum of 43 weeks with price ranging from £240-£644/month. One also has to pay a refundable deposit of £200 and utilities are included in the rent.

Private letting agents also offer fully furnished flats and houses with 2-6 bedrooms on rent which can be shared by various housemates. Many of them are conveniently located near the city centre, Westend and Gathdee. The rentals start from around £600 and sky’s the limit here, depending on the location, construction, size and the facilities available. Aberdeen is a bit expensive when it comes to private housing and yet living independently in this beautiful city with its beaches and nightlife can be an invigorating experience.
